Metamorphosis
2025
Metamorphosis is an ensemble work developed from the original duo piece TAMA. At its core lies a meditation on repetition and transformation—drawing inspiration from kendama, a traditional Japanese skill toy that I have been deeply familiar with over the years.
One of the most fundamental kendama techniques, moshikame, involves rhythmically transferring the ball between two cups to the children’s song Usagi to Kame (The Rabbit and the Turtle). This simple repetition, often performed hundreds or thousands of times during ranking tests, can induce a hypnotic state where the boundaries of the self begin to dissolve. That dissolving of self through repeated motion became a key conceptual trigger in this work.
Through repetitive movement, the piece explores how the body transforms subtly over time—mirroring a world in constant flux. Metamorphosis seeks to embody a state where transformation is never complete but always unfolding, revealing a landscape of continuous becoming.
